In the Zhouli\u00a0\u5468\u79ae there are nine appointments\u00a0mentioned, the <em>jiuming<\/em>\u00a0\u4e5d\u547d,\u00a0each giving greater awards:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">[The <em>jiuming<\/em>\u00a0\u4e5d\u547d are]\u00a0an array of official ranks ascribed\u00a0to ancient times and often revived by subsequent Chou dynasties, in which the 9th honor (i.e., rank 9) was highest\u00a0and the first honor was lowest.<br \/>\n(C. Hucker,\u00a0<em>A Dictionary of Official Titles In Imperial China<\/em>, p. 176)<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">(&#8230;) The nine appointments were \u53d7\u8077 to receive official duties, \u53d7\u670d to receive uniform, \u53d7\u4f4d to receive rank, \u53d7\u5668 to receive equipments, \u8cdc\u5247 to bestow regulations\uff0c\u8cdc\u5b98 to bestow official title, \u8cdc\u570b to bestow fief, \u4f5c\u7267 to be shepherd, and \u4f5c\u4f2f to be leader.<br \/>\n(David Y. Hu, <em>Chinese-English Dictionary of Chinese Historical Terminology<\/em>; p. 469)<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0The translations that Hu\u00a0provides for each appointment are somewhat simplistic, for instance\u00a0<em>zuomu<\/em>\u00a0\u4f5c\u7267 does not mean that you are just a shepherd, you were governor of a state and were allowed to go on punitive expeditions without the king&#8217;s consent &#8211; &#8216;to be shepherd&#8217; is merely a metaphor for this task.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Amid the army.
